We started our adventure in the Spring of 2012 with the idea of mapping people’s relationship to things in their life. Building the ‘material graph’ was our main objective and to do that we created the app thin.gs. After the early alpha last summer the in-depth interviews, which we lead with our alpha testers, revealed that people are not just interested in sharing the things in their life, but that they are very curious to learn more about them.
When we analyzed this desire, we quickly found a wealth of information – freely available on the web already – which could satisfy this need. We soon found out, though, that the task to provide great entertaining, interesting, relevant and inspiring insights was much more challenging than we anticipated at first.. But we realized that if we would understand context and the semantics of data, we could create something truly useful and it would mean to make a giant leap forward to become a very unique company.
Therefore, in the last nine months we focused on developing the foundations of our Context Engine. Important for us is to stress the fact, that a lot of what we do of course stands on the shoulder of giants. We are making use of existing data, algorithms and technologies which are the result of many years of research in many different disciplines of information technology and artificial intelligence.
We came a long way. The results will be visible in the next beta version of thin.gs. We still have some way to go, though, until our complete vision of the context engine will be reality. We strongly believe in our goal to make your world a smarter place and we’re glad to share with you our vision and some first background info on our core technology, on thin.gs and the team behind it.
